# Mass storage usage rules
The GIGA mass storage has been designed to store large scientific data generated by its community. Therefore, the **following type of data can’t be stored** on the mass storage:
- Personal data (holiday pictures, music, movies, accounting, etc.)
- Professional data that are not related to the function within the University of Liege and/or CHU (secondary activity, ...)
- Documents of an obscene, pornographic, racist or hateful nature
- Copyrighted material or copies of copyrighted material for which the user doesn’t have rights of use (including images, text documents, movies, music, etc.)
Moreover, the GIGA **mass storage space can’t be used** to:
- run or store malware or scripts that can decrease the stability of the system or increase its vulnerability
- steal other people identity and/or authentication information, hack into another system or access data or files that are not intended to you
- perform any advertising, commercial or illegal action
- break the law in any way and/or violate the privacy of others
- distribute or sell data or disk space
Importantly, to ensure proper functioning of the mass storage to the benefit of the entire GIGA community, it is also **prohibited to**
- perform calculations or run analysis tools directly on the mass storage. These should be run on your desktop computer, on a dedicated computer or the GIGA cluster's calculation nodes using [slurm](cluster/slurm/slurm-home).
- create files or folders in /stornext/snfs1 or /stornext/snfs1/SHARE (= /home/SHARE)
- store raw data coming out of scientific equipment without the authorisation of the UDI GIGA-MED IT specialists
- store a large number of small files (typically tens of thousands of files of less than 1 Mb) directly on the mass storage.
Regarding the last point about, by the nature of their trees, the servers can hardly manage and save these extremely fragmented data. This affects the whole storage performance and penalises all users.
If numerous small files need to be generated while analysing data, they must be generated in a temporary folder, for example on the GIGA scratch disk for cluster users, and deleted at the end of the analysis. Nevertheless, if these numerous small files need to be kept afterwards, they must be encapsulated into TAR or DAR archives and compressed before being transferred to the mass storage. Of note, the GIGA scratch disk is not backed up, and any data left there that have not been used (modified, opened or read) for a month are automatically deleted. These procedures are explained in more details in the Genomics Cluster User Charter.
If needed or in case of emergency, the managers of the IT system can be contacted to discuss the situation and set up specific actions to store these data while minimising their impact on the system.
Any breach of this obligation may, in the event of abuse, end with the deletion of the data and the withdrawal of the access of the user to the GIGA's storage space. |
